A product of the Lorillard Tobacco Company, Newport cigarettes were originally introduced as a menthol flavoured brand in 1957. Ever since, they have gained much popularity and currently they enjoy a high market share of 35% of menthol cigarette sales in the US. Over the years, Newports have gained a strong market share among African Americans, proven by the fact that they make up almost 50% of cigarette sales to the African American community.

When they were firstly made, Newports came with a white filtered tip and had a hint of mint flavour. However, this version of Newports ceased its production in 1969 and the white filter was replaced by a standard filter. The promotional campaign of the Newport Classic full flavor cigarettes under the slogan “Enjoy flavor menthol fully, without drowning out pure tobacco taste,” highlighted the fact that Newports contained more menthol than nicotine.  In the mid-1980’s the company launched a promotional campaign particularly oriented towards African Americans residing in urban areas. The campaign was successful and thus within just two years, the Newport brand became the fifth most popular, best-selling cigarettes on the market, due to the fact that they managed to offer smokers the perfect balance in taste between the flavours of premium quality tobacco and menthol.

Newport cigarettes were extremely successful in the younger groups of smokers, managing to double their percentage of teenage smokers between 1989 and 1996, a period when Newports also became very popular not only in the African American community, but also among the White and Hispanic young smokers. Perhaps this is partly explained by the fact that, alongside the unfilreted version of the Camel cigarette brand, the Newport brand was found by independent studies to contain the highest levels of nicotine when compared to other brands sold in the domestic US market. This already high level of nicotine, was subsequently increased by Lorillard, by a further 10%.

Despite its being famous for its menthol variety, the Newport brand also includes  non-menthol kinds of cigarettes with an intense and strong taste Newports are available in a full flavour version, as well as the Blue and Gold varieties which are of medium and light intensity respectively, and code named so following the law which banned the use of various terms such as “lights” on cigarette packs.  In general, Newports come in the standard pack containing 20 cigarettes, but also a larger packet with 25 cigarettes is also available. Moreover, all the Newport varieties are sold in 85mm (king size) length, 80 mm as well as 100 mm, both is soft and hard packs for each length type and flavour variety.
